Best Large Venue
The Scottish Exhibition + Conference Centre (SECC) has been named the UK's Best UK Conference Centre, for the third time in a poll for the influential industry magazine Meetings & Incentive Travel (M&IT). There was also further endorsement for Glasgow as the GCMB picked up 'Best UK Convention Bureau' award for the sixth consecutive year.
The annual M&IT Awards are considered highly prestigious because they are voted for by more than 3,000 meetings industry professionals. They were presented at a gala dinner at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge Hotel in London attended by more than 600 industry leaders from around the world.
Ben Goedegebuure, Director of Sales at the Scottish Exhibition + Conference Centre, said: "This is a stunning endorsement of Glasgow's meetings industry and underlines our status as leaders and innovators in business tourism both domestically and internationally. As a venue we work closely with the city through Glasgow City Marketing Bureau and we couldn't be more delighted with their well deserved award. This caps another great year for Glasgow."
Meanwhile Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, said: "This award, which is recognised as the industry's 'gold standard', demonstrates not only a resounding vote of confidence in Glasgow by conference organisers and buyers, but also the co-ordinated approach taken by Glasgow City Marketing Bureau and the SECC in the drive to bring business tourism to the city. Winning this award is fantastic news for Glasgow and underpins exactly why we are Scotland's conference capital."
SECC SCOOPS GOLD STAR RECOGNITION AT GREEN BUSINESS TOURISM SCHEME AWARDS
The Scottish Exhibition + Conference Centre (SECC) has beaten off stiff opposition to win a Gold Star Award for Greenest Conference Venue at the Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS).
The award comes just weeks after the venue launched its Better Business campaign, looking at how the venue can increase its positive contributions to staff, customers and its local, regional and national communities.
The Green Tourism Business Scheme recognised its highest achievers of the last 12 months with eight new categories of Gold Star Awards as part of its Green Tourism Week awareness campaign (21-27 May 2012).
"This is a hugely competitive environment and great steps have been taken to advance CSR in our industry so we're obviously hugely delighted to have picked up the award," commented Ben Goedegebuure, Sales Director at the SECC. "The judges commended our venue for demonstrating 'the highest levels of green ambassadorship, innovation and cost savings over the last year'."
"The awards are well timed, CSR has been in danger of becoming a fad, or box ticking exercise. The Green Business Tourism Scheme awards organisations that embrace a wider approach to CSR, and will project the debate back into the hearts of businesses."

Greener and smarter...what SECC has done to improve the visitor experience over the past year.

Over the past year, the SECC has made great strides in helping both visitors and exhibitors at the venue be greener than ever before. 2009 also saw the SECC awarded a Green Tourism Business Scheme Gold award.
The SECC invested in a baler and minimiser in late 2007 and this has been put to great use. The SECC can now reduce many waste streams - cans, glass, paper, plastic, polythene and wood. As a venue, we are also making strides to recycling all event carpeting. All SECC power demands are also met from green sources.
We actively promote the great public transport links to our venue - showing visitors to exhibitions just how easy it is to take public transport. We also have our own railway station. During 2008, we worked on cross promotions with local transport providers to encourage visitors to take greener routes.
The SECC also helped organisers by recycling surplus items, ensuring the exhibition items/giveaways which would otherwise go to landfill are well-used. For example, last year we organised for surplus branded bags to go to a school in Africa where they are now being used as school bags.
SECC supports the 'Trees for Life' conservation charity dedicated to the restoration and regeneration of the Caledonian Forest in the Highlands of Scotland.
Part of the green story also extends to SECC's green fingers. SECC has three urban gardens, maintained by our own gardeners. These supply tasty herbs to our Gallery Bistro - where visitors to exhibitions can enjoy delicious, locally sourced produce.
